Panic and Recover Mechanism

How panic propagation works in Go's runtime, defer chain unwinding, recover semantics, and the performance cost of panic/recover patterns.

Introduction

Panic and recover are Go's exception-like mechanism for handling truly exceptional situations. While errors are the idiomatic way to handle expected failures in Go, panic is reserved for runtime errors and conditions that should never occur during normal execution—nil pointer dereferences, out-of-bounds access, type assertion failures, and intentional program aborts.

However, many developers misuse panic/recover for control flow, treating them as a performance-optimized alternative to error returns. This article explores how panic and recover work at the runtime level, benchmarks their actual performance cost, and provides guidance on when—if ever—they should be used in production code.

What Happens When Panic() is Called

When you call panic(v) with some value v, the runtime initiates a process that will walk the call stack, unwinding deferred functions in reverse order of execution, until either:

  1. A deferred function recovers the panic, or
  2. The panic reaches the top of the main goroutine's stack, causing the program to crash

The Panic Mechanism: Runtime.Gopanic

Panic begins with a call to runtime.gopanic:

The _panic Struct

Each active panic is represented by a _panic struct, linked in a chain:

The link field is critical: it creates a linked list of active panics. If a panic occurs during panic handling (panic in a defer), a new _panic struct is allocated and linked, creating a chain.

Why the Chain?

Go supports nested panics—a panic can occur while handling another panic:

Defer Chain Unwinding

When a panic occurs, the runtime must unwind the defer chain—executing deferred functions in reverse order of definition. This is one of the most complex parts of the panic mechanism.

The _defer Struct

Each deferred function is recorded in a _defer struct:

Unwinding During Panic

The unwinding is synchronous and atomic: each defer must complete before the next begins.

How Recover() Works

The recover() built-in function captures a panic and prevents further unwinding:

Why Recover Only Works in Directly Deferred Functions

A common mistake is trying to recover in a nested function:

Open-Coded Defers (Go 1.14+)

Go 1.14 introduced "open-coded defers" as a performance optimization. Instead of allocating _defer structs on the heap, the compiler can inline defer cleanup code directly into functions.

How Open-Coded Defers Work

When the compiler detects that a function has a small number of simple defers (usually fewer than 8), it generates inline cleanup code:

The deferBits bitmask tracks which defers have been registered, allowing the compiler to only execute defers that were actually reached.

Open-Coded Defer Panic Handling

When a panic occurs in a function with open-coded defers, the runtime must still execute the cleanup code. This is done via a special panic path:

Fatal Panics

Some panics can't be recovered. These "fatal panics" terminate the program immediately:
